5 Mistakes in Online Visibility for Architects (and the Fix)

Your work speaks for itself. That's what many architects and interior professionals think, and understandably so, because the quality is there. But online, it works differently. On the internet, people only see what's visible. And what's not visible doesn't exist.
In my work as a video marketing specialist for the architecture and interior design industry, I keep running into the same mistakes. Not big blunders, but creeping habits that together keep beautiful firms invisible. Here are the five most common mistakes and how to fix them.
Mistake 1 – You rely solely on photography
Photography is a powerful medium. But it's a still life. It shows one moment, from one angle, with one type of light. A potential client visiting your website has to fill in everything themselves from photos: how does the space feel? How does the layout flow? What makes this project special?
Video answers those questions without the visitor even having to ask them. It guides the viewer, creates an experience, and builds trust faster than any other medium.
The fix: combine photography with video. One project video per completed project is enough to make a fundamentally different impression.
Mistake 2 – You post sporadically and hope for organic reach
You post a photo of a recent project on LinkedIn, get a few likes, and think: nice work. But three weeks later there's nothing new. Then another post two months after that. Then silence.
Algorithms on LinkedIn and Instagram reward consistency. The more often and regularly you post content, the more people will see it, even people who don't yet follow you. Whoever posts sporadically simply gets ignored by the algorithm.
The fix: set up a content calendar and stick to it. One post a week on LinkedIn is already enough to build your visibility structurally. An annual contract with Eigen Bodem takes this completely off your plate.
Mistake 3 – You focus on the project, not the client
Most firms talk about themselves: 'We built this.' 'This is our latest project.' 'Look what we can do.' That's understandable, you're proud of your work, but your ideal client thinks differently.
They think: 'What's in it for me? Do they understand my type of project? Could I get this done with them?' Online visibility only works once you communicate from your client's perspective, not from your own pride.
The fix: ask yourself with every piece of content: why is this relevant to my ideal client? Don't just tell them what you made, tell them why it made the difference for the client.
Mistake 4 – You invest in production, but not in distribution
You have a beautiful video made. The result is good. You post it once on your website and send the link to a few people. And after that... nothing more.
This is one of the most costly mistakes I see. Not in money, but in missed opportunities. One video can be used on your website, on LinkedIn, as a Reel on Instagram, as a Story, as part of a proposal, in an email signature, during a presentation. But that requires a plan.
The fix: think about distribution during the production phase itself, for every piece of content. Where and when will you publish it? How will you cut the video for different platforms? Who will you send it to? A good video marketing partner actively thinks this through with you.
Mistake 5 – You wait for the perfect moment
'We'll start once this project is finished.' 'We'll do it once the website is redesigned.' 'We'll start after the summer break.' Sound familiar?
The perfect moment doesn't exist. While you wait, your competitors are visible. Building visibility takes time, SEO only pays off after months of consistent effort, and you don't build a following in a week. Every month you wait is a month behind.
The fix: start today, with what you have now. A good project, an authentic story, and the right video partner are enough to get going. You can refine perfection along the way.
In short
The five mistakes are easy to remember:
1. Using photos only > add video
2. Posting sporadically > choose consistency
3. Talking about yourself > speak from the client's perspective
4. Producing without a distribution plan > think about spread first
5. Waiting for the perfect moment > start now
Do you recognize yourself in one or more of these mistakes? Then you're certainly not alone. Most architects and interior professionals simply aren't trained as marketers, and that's OK. That's exactly what Eigen Bodem is here for.
